High School Athletes College Recruiting Help
Do You Need Help With The College Recruiting Process
The answer to this is most definitely. Why do I say that? My son has been getting letters from D-1 schools since he was in the 9th grade. We were invited to go to combine events at D-1 Schools starting with his sophomore year. He went up against kids that were older then him by three years. I was very proud of him as he won every one on one event that he was put into but one. He was one of only three sophomores that was there. None of the other sophomores were linemen. Many of these kids are already playing college ball now and he beat them at heads up competition! You would think this means we would not have to do anything for our son in the recruiting process. That is what I thought. The coaching staff at our high school told us not to worry about the recruiting process as they would help us when the time came at the end of his senior season. Imagine my surprise when after football season we did not have a commitment from any college.
You know what they say about 20-20 hind sight. Well, in looking back over the last three years I now understand more about how the recruiting process works and where we went wrong. We went to the college invitations to visit them on a game day. We were treated like royalty by getting to march out on the field in front of the school supporters with the band playing, the cheer squads shouting, and the dance squads performing along our route into the stadium. I thought my son's head was going to explode at each of these events we were invited to attend. I guess I got the big head a little myself. We kept getting positive comments about how they liked what they saw regarding size and skill improvements at each of these event. We had picked one of these school as our first choice. For three years this school made it clear that they wanted my son to play football at their school. Even though it was not allowed for each of us to make a commitment during this three years. It was discussed that we thought of them as our first and only choice. Not one time during any of these conversations was it put out to us that they may change their mind. When I contacted them after my son's senior season they informed us that they were no longer interested. I could not believe it! The story does not get better until I met Ronnie Savage at S.E.A.! At that point we were back in control.
The first thing I want to share with you is that there are companies out there that claim to provide school recruiting help. I had about 20 of them that came and sat with us at our kitchen table. We got a lot of promises and great things were said about my son to make our head swell. Then they started talking to me about spending around $5000 for their service. Many of them had professional DVD presentations that they wanted us to watch that looked and sounded like they knew what they were doing. Most of them were more concerned with getting a list of other players with phone numbers from us.
When Ronnie Savage walked in our door he was not anything like the other people. He made it clear that we were behind in this process and he wanted to meet and talk to our son alone before things went any further. He came out of my son's room and told us that he could help us get our son into college. He then sat down with us at our kitchen table and told us about the company and what they offer. I told him of the schools we had letters from and he told me I could call them and they would verify his having worked with them in the past. This was a first as most kept in control of the conversation like an Amway sales person. I had a cell phone number for one of the coaches at Vanderbilt University. I called him right then. I was very impressed with the content of that phone conversation and the ease of Mr. Savage while I made that call. It was clear that he had no fear in my checking up on him. I had a cell phone number for the coach at Alabama. I called him and he informed me that S.E.A. was known for providing accurate information on the kids they represented so well that he could trust their information when scouting players to fill a position. He asked me if I had talked to any of the other companies and right there on the phone told me several to stay away from. Most of these were the big name companies that had the professional DVD presentation. I was sold right then and there. There was still the issue of cost. When I found I could buy a package for around $1000 I was hooked. The end result is he helped get my son into college with a full scholarship.
Part of this process is that I found out we should have looked for professional help when my son hit the 9th grade. The first thing you need to do is to get your child's ability evaluated. There are two reasons for this. First, if there are any skills deficiencies (they all have some of these), Mr. Savage and his staff can point them out and get you help to improve those areas. Second, we all think that our kid is the best at his position. A professional trained sports evaluator knows exactly how to look at potential and can tell you if your child has what it takes to make it to the next level. Last but not least you need to have a credible evaluation in pocket that college recruiters trust. This opens a lot more doors for you in the recruiting process.
As I mentioned before most of you do not want to leave this in the hands of your high school coaches. I am sure that there are exceptions to this and I would have bet one year ago that our coach was one of those exceptions. Some of this is not their fault. They have limited time and resources to help with this process. Their priority is to win football games. No matter how much he tells everybody that his objective is the boys first and the game second he will not keep his job if the kids are not improving and winning games. It is not going to effect his job if your son does not get a scholarship to play college ball.
You need someone in this process that works for you. Someone that their job is not to win football games. This needs to be someone that the college recruiters respect their ability to evaluate your son or daughter as an athlete. We found a someone that fits this to the a T and share this with you so that you do not have to suffer like we did. I cannot explain how kids with major talent can slip through the cracks but it happens a lot more then you would think possible.
